Heavy hail for us this morning. Thankfully I went out first thing to fill the bird feeders - there's no way I'm going out there now! Dan got all the candles and candle holders out of the garage yesterday so they're all set to go in case of emergency!

Snap! me too fibsey....... when I was out shopping, I fell over about 4 years ago and smashed my left elbow, broke my lower L arm and dislocated my L shoulder, 5 months and 2 ops later I have limited movement but it could have been worse.
So I am also prepared but then, I try and not go out too much when its slippery....

last year I wore second hand kid's football boots (small feet) with the plastic torn off the cleats to leave just the metal studs.

Re: 2011-2012 winter
It's been so windy here for the past week Dan has finally decided that some of the more extreme emergency prep might indeed be a good idea! We already have everything in the car (he used to travel 80 miles to work so he was aware of being stranded!) but he's been a little more reluctant with things for the house beyond the normal insulation and stuff. So today he is off to buy a small camping stove and gas canisters, snow shoes and a folding snow shovel! What pushed him over the edge is that someone we know in Scotland thanked me for telling them about Yaktraks and they've been using theirs already this year. Better for it to happen today before the sleet and freezing rain we've been forecast for next week!

Re: 2011-2012 winter
we have a small gas cooker, cannisters, gas kettle and a wind up torch. I also put a load of kid's stuff on my ipod and make sure it's always as charged as possible in winter just in case sophie needs calming during a power cut, it runs on battery.

Re: 2011-2012 winter
We have wind up torches and all that stuff but I think Dan just had the realisation that we'd have no way of cooking or heating the place if there was no electricity. I've reserved all the stuff we want to buy so he just has to pick it up.
We were out the other night and saw some children walking about with head torches on, thought that was a great idea. Great idea for you to stick some stuff for Sophie on your iPod.

Re: 2011-2012 winter
Well I'm getting my windows washed by the rain, its quite windy, the powers been flicking off and on so could be in the dark later. I've just remembered being in the dark last year making some Christmas bits in the kitchen, got a load of candles out then OH came in, his first words were have we a power cut. What a daft thing to say, think my answer was rather sarcastic
Got a solid fuel rayburn and log burner so no problem with food/heat just a pain lighting candles everywere.

Re: 2011-2012 winter
We started looking for flooring yesterday. At the minute we just have the concrete floor in the living area and it's freezing! We can't have carpet because of the rabbits so we're looking for something cosy but headwearing and something that can't be chewed!
I was having a look online yesterday when Dan saw one he loved, he's set his mind on having that now - was it the £15 a metre laminate I was looking at do you think? Nooooooooooo. So to have it for this time next year we need to get our saving caps on...
Also, I finally got round to fixing the draught excluder brush strip to the front door this weekend, makes loads of difference.
