Anyone else love to read and what are you reading just now

Post  lollyfin on Sat Aug 27, 2011 8:29 pm

One of my passions in life is reading and always has been. I pretty much read anything and am one of these people who will re-read favorite books. I am decluttering my books as an ongoing thing to do but find it difficult to get rid of them..im quite sad!
I remember from the age of about 5 every saturday morning was library time, my dad loves to read too, and how exciting it was to pick my books for the week and how much I loved just being in the library
I have a Kindle as well which goes everywhere with me in my handbag, yes even to the shops you never know when you will have a spare minute
I am currently on the last book of Stephen Kings The Dark Tower, I wasnt sure when I started the first book if I was going to like it but it sort of sucked me in and now im nearly finished and cant wait to find out how it ends but also going to miss it when its over
i have been staying up into the wee small hours reading it and im totally shattered but loving it...I love finding a book that you are sitting at 2 in the morning going im so tired but im just going to read another couple of pages/another chapter...hope im not the only one who does that Embarassed

Hi,

I do like reading but I rarely read fiction these days. After uni I found it really hard to get back into reading for fun, before that I would have a book on the go all the time. When I do read fiction I like George Orwell, Thomas Hardy, Jostein Gaarder and for a bit of flim flam fun Carl Hiaasen.

At the minute I'm reading a book about Bauhaus (the art not the band) and am looking lots at design books - especially 50's art, Lucienne Day etc.

Me, I can't imagine life without books. I love the smell and feel of them, so a Kindle definitely isn't on my wish list.
I tend to read light fluffy novels nowadays. I can't remember the author of the one I've just started, it's called Room.
I go through phases of reading one author & hope that they hurry up & write more before I've finished their current books.
I'm lucky as my library is 100 yeards away from the house, although I've been passed so many recently that I've not needed to borrow any for ages.
I keep thinning out my books but then a few weeks later I'm tripping over box fulls again.

I read and read and read
Hubby bought me a Kindle for Xmas and I've just finished knitting a bag for it - I'm scared of dropping it!!
I re-read books - Harry Potter inparticular
DD reads alot too and DS reads comics - he's yet to "get" how good books are and DH is an avid reader of Art and/or Fishing books

I have a clear out every so often but keep some books so I can read them again

The Library involves a car ride and parking charges so we don't visit there too often and I find its opening hours are not what we want - would use it alot more if it was open on a Sunday

I was dubious about the kindle, both myself and husband, are book obsessed.....but I love it. I am working my way through all of Kate Atkinson novels. also rereading a lot of classics, and some of the books i read as a teenager.
I like to read several books at once...well you know what I mean,so I can pick and choose according to how i feel.
I like a good crime/detective book,i like most things except out and out romance fiction.

I go nowhere without a book. DH bought be a Kindle for my birthday, not as good as the real thing but a godsend for holidays. No more filling half a suitcase with books.

I read and re-read. Both DH and I have a full IKEA Billy bookcase double depth, and the books spill out onto the floor. I keep meaning to get rid of some but then think of something about them that I will want to re-read.

As I was on the train with limited packing - and my parents are just as avid readers, I just brought my Kindle. I'm currently re-reading James Clavell's Shogun. Amazing book about 15th Century Japan. (Also great mini-series with Richard Chamberlain)

My naughty weakness is historical romance. Mills and Boon (hangs head in shame Embarassed ), Julia Quinn, Stephanie Laurens.

I read almost anything I can get my hands on bar romance/mills & boon type stuff! My favourites are crime, thriller and fantasy - easy reading but a rollicking good story types as I save my (limited some days) brain power for my OU coursework and just read to relax. My idea of heaven is a big, hot bubbly bath a large glass of pinot grigio and a good crime or vampire book! Embarassed

Mills and Boon the horror!! only kidding... i have never read any to be honest maybe give it a go!
well I have to admit to having read the Harry Potter books at least 10 times each, probably more and the same with the Twilights I know they are supposed to be kids books but I really like them
When The Deathly Hallows came out I bought it at 9 in the morning and sat in my room (like a kid Very Happy ) all day until I finished it that evening then went back and read it again, just incase i missed something Embarassed
i have got quite a few classics on my kindle v embarassed to admit to not having read probably any of the books you are "supposed" to have read if you love reading, so far out of them I have read Dracula and must admit that apart from the attitude towards women in those days, pat you on the head and go sit in the corner,i did enjoy it am thinking about Frankenstein next...oh seeing a pattern here!...or maybe i will try Jane Eyre ( bit scared to try in case i dont get it then have to admit to being stupid!)

I enjoy reading. There are no plans to buy a Kindle, for the time being at least. My books are littered with comments on post-it notes and older books (from the pre post-it days) have many notes written in the margins. Can you add notes to a Kindle book? Anyway, I'm about to start reading The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. The book has good reviews so hope that it's a decent read. (Btw, I haven't seen the film.)

I didn't like it at all, nor did my daughter. I'm not sure though if it was the circumstances, I was in Spain while my daughter was in hospital for a month after an accident. Having nobody to talk to, as nobody spoke English.

Hi there,

Time traveller's wife is a fab book and I went to see the film with some trepidation as I usually think they make a complete balls up of good books but it actually works, even my OH really enjoyed it and he's usually a startrek, lord of the rings type! I'm sure I saw him wiping his eyes a couple of times! Laughing

I went off hours ago to sort out ebay stuff, but decided to have a bath first & a bit of reading. I started Room by Emma Donoghue a couple of days ago but had only read a few pages each night to help me sleep.
I've now finished it & feel quite bereft.
It's a book written in the words of a 5 year old boy, who's born & kept captive in a room with his Mum.
Brilliant book.

I also loved Room - I literally sat down and read it cover to cover without ever putting it down - I think I went to the bathroom a couple of times but it went with me Very Happy

I was very dubious about Time Traveller's Wife - the blurb on the back didn't attract me at all - but I absolutely loved it. I also enjoyed Her Fearful Symmetry which was completely barking mad but incredibly unputdownable.

A series I've recently enjoyed, which kind of straddles the line between fluff and literary fiction, is the detective stuff by Camilla Lackberg, translated from the Swedish. I've read each one of those in less than a day, and am impatiently waiting for my turn to get the latest one from the library. At the moment, you can reserve books for free with Manchester Libraries, but with all the cuts I bet we'll soon have to pay.

At the moment I'm reading Trespass by Valerie Martin and really enjoying that too.

I absolutely can't wait for the latest in the Isabel Dalhousie series from Alexander McCall Smith.

I love reading :-) I have a Kindle. It's a blessing to take out, as it slips into my handbag nicely and isn't heavy. I still love to buy books though.
My reading loves are Christian reading, crime, i.e. Agatha Christie, Colin Dexter and my favourite P.D.James. I enjoy the Jane Austin novels, and love reading history stuff. Yes, this is really sad now, but I find great pleasure in reading recipe books Razz I like lifestyle/downshifting/thrifty type books as well :-)

I love reading too. I've literally just finished The Light of Evening by Edna O'Brien (really enjoyed it) and then logged on here and found this book thread Very Happy . Not sure what to read next. I have a few books I'm dipping in to, such as The Wild Places by Robert Macfarlane - really descriptive writing about the last (in his view) wild and remote places in Britain - lovely chapters on woods, lochs, mountains. This is my 2nd reading. I'm lucky in that i live 5-10 mins walk from a good library and we can order from the catalogue at no charge. I decluttered books a few years ago - used to have piles beside armchairs as well as stacked high on top of overcrowded, double filled bookcases. I rarely buy novels now but do buy cook books now and then! I'm another one who really enjoyed Room.
