Supermarket price cuts

I am going in to Mr T today to see if these price cuts they have spoken about on the news are real or just more fibs. you know the kind, we are slashing this price to 50p (em thats what it was 2 weeks ago before you put it up to 80p). fingers crossed they are real and apparently they are cutting down on their 3 for 2 deals as they have discovered people would rather pay a lower price for a single item than have to pay an inflatted price for 2 to get 1 free. I wonder how long it took them to figure that out and how much it cost!
I am also totally shocked at what they said the average shopping bill per week is...£135 a week
i thought we were doing quite well on the income front but obviously not as theres no way i could afford to spend that a week.
This will be quite good if you have an asda and tesco near each other as asda have said they will carry on with their 10% cheaper than tesco guarantee. My closest asda is miles away .
Hopefully we will see some more cash in our shopping purses then it can go to pay our heating bills sigh its never ending

I was wondering about this too as I'll be shopping this week. I go to Asda but Tesco would be more convenient if the prices come down to match Asda. I'm also intrigued as to how you get on and will watch this thread closely

i am back
I will be honest there were some price cuts but nothing massive that i could see
the best price cuts were
chickens that were £5 now £4
mince that was £2.20 now £1.80
em i cant actually remember any thing else in the way of meat
they have reduced their own butter spread by about 10p and a cheese by 80p i think
i didnt see much in the way of fruit and veg
and the tinned stuff was a penny here or there
they had some small reductions on frozen veg and fish
there was no reduction on toilet roll and very small ones on cleaning stuff
so i think their an average shop will drop by £20 was them adding up all the savings of every thing they have reduced rather than looking at a weekly shop you could make meals out of

or it could be that because of where i live we have missed some of the reductions due to our tesco not stocking the stuff, i suppose you would describe it as a middle sized one, its certainly not large
so i will be waiting to see if anyone else finds better price reductions

the meal deal they are doing is quite good its 5 pork chops,bag of potatoes, fresh sage, bag of apples, creme fraiche and wholegrain mustard for £5 you save £5.86 on the individual price and the recipe card to go with it is for Roast pork chops with caramelised apples which sounds quite nice but i am planning on getting more than one meal out of it

we bounce around supermarkets, mainly because we can't find everything we need for the price we want under one roof.
this week's bits and bobs came from sainsbury's ; we needed cream and they're the only people who sell arla lactofree cream in basildon, and home bargains and wilkinson. next week's will be asda's as we need cheese and we all like their extra mature, and me and jim like smartprice washing powder and asda own brand conditioner; although I like sainsbury's too.

I think shopping around is the only way to do it now
I have a Lidl, Tesco and v. expensive coop here and thats it unfortunately
there is a morrisons and asda but they are 18 miles away so only get stuff from there really if my mum is going
she picks me up any bargains she sees. We have it worked out that I give her £20 at the beginning of the month for bargains (shes very good at finding them a lot better than me)

thats why I dont go to those shops
i think no matter what i save its cost me more in fuel to get there and back so its a waste of time
my mum and dad go through about once a week anyway so they keep an eye out for things for me
fuel prices are so expensive now that i you really have to think before going in the car, not that it sounds like i have much this past week its been kind of chaotic taking kids all over the place so i combine that with shopping only one trip

I don't trust Tesco at all. They're ruthless and only ever out to make money. Maybe the cheaper shops have them on the hop in this time of needing to be careful with money, maybe they're loosing a section of our society that cannot afford 'normal' super market prices and trying to attract the aldi/lidl/homebargains crowd. I don't know but it'll not be a cut for our benefit, it'll be to line their pockets.

I read on MSE something about them cutting the value of the reward points to fund the price cuts. That says to me they'll still be making their profits, maybe even increasing them while they're still squeezing the farmers and producers dry and reducing the benefits to their loyal customers. Although I fear that 'we pay' for our benefits anyway by them increasing the costs across the stores to fund the clubcard points.

Saying that, I have a clubcard and sometimes shop there. I am hoping they double up at christmas to put towards a little bike for DD2 for Christmas. Someone push me off my soapbox lol

i agree i really hate Tescos and so does the oh he wont go in there. He used to work for them years ago before he set up in business and told me some things.

I do have a clubcard and pop in sometimes because there is a handy shop i can walk too. Its a small one.

I would never buy meat in there well i wouldnt would I, and also i wouldnt buy newspapers and magazines in there. Instead of the motto every little helps i like to think every little hurts.

i think they are the greediest and hate the way they want to take over the world.

I agree with you froogs, I think it's a high profile gimmick to get shoppers back who've started using Aldi or Lidl. Lots of people will probably see the card points as a "bonus" too so might give Tesco another go. I haven't been there for years, we always thought it was expensive anyway am not a huge fan.

I have to confess I don't shop around all that much, if Home Bargains doesn't look too packed when we pass we'll nip in once a month or so. I buy our dried fruit and nuts from Julian Graves at the outlet village place then everything else is from the same supermarket - unless we're out somewhere and have an emergency. Tbh I find it easier to handle my budget if I'm not buying things from lots of different shops, but that's another story!

It did say in a newspaper article (cant remember which one) that Tesco were doing this to try and bring back customers that they have lost to Lidl and Aldi.

It was in the news today that some people have been abusing the voucher system in supermarkets and the police have had to be called. Something about reusing vouchers at self service tills where there isnt an assistant to take the coupon away after use. One couple had saved loads on their shopping but were caught out.

Ha ha the supermarkets didnt think of everything.

I guess it depends if the voucher says some thing like 'one time use only' if there's nothing on the voucher to say you can only use it once then surely the law can't touch them?

this kind of annoys me cos i am a regular LEGAL coupon user and it kinda pisses me off that when people abuse it, everyone loses it. sorry about the language!

although with my P+G fairy coupons I got 6 coupons for £1 off 650mls fairy (2 my name printed from laptop, 2 jim's printed from desktop, 2 brother's name printed from his printer with his permission) and used them when tesco had a 2 for £2.50 offer on the 650ml fairy, so now we have about a years worth of fairy.

I agree with you flibsey. I'm not a huge user of coupons - don't often get them for things I buy. But when people abuse the system to the detriment of others it gets on my pip.
