New Supermarket opening March what do you think?

Post  TP on Mon Jan 16, 2012 10:44 pm

We have a very big Asda opening in March (like we need another sm but there you go) and it opposite Aldi. Do you think Aldi will lose trade? I have been wondering this for a while?

I think Asda will probably have a massive leaflet drop with money off vouchers. IIRC when one near our old house opened we got a £5 voucher every week for about 3 weeks. Then after the initial flurry of activity people will settle back into their normal routine. Anyone I know who is bothered about saving money shops in a couple of places anyway so one shop opening near an existing one will just mean less money spent on petrol.

Yeah, I don't know why people do that... I'm pretty loyal to the supermarket I shop at and would rather chew my own arm off than go to Asda. All that music and noise and shouty people and kids running around. No thanks.

I thought it was just me that was a bit 'sniffy' about ASDA. I hate it!

Unpleasant atmosphere somehow, as AlecEiffel said, noisy, shouty people. The fruit and veg and meat aren't as tempting as some you see in other shops/butchers and so on. Layout of the stores is another.

But, because I don't shop in ASDA often, I never know where stuff is. I have found the staff to be really cheerful, well trained and helpful. My favourite vest top of all time was from George many years ago!

Or maybe I'm just a snob! Hmm, but I do shop at Aldi and Lidl!

I agree with you PI, the staff are very helpful and friendly at Asda. I've never had a problem with the quality their stuff, on the rare occasion we've returned non-food items there have been no issues at all. It's just that I don't like big, noisy shops with music and all that stuff, I'd be the same with any other huge store.

When we had no car we had to shop at Asda as it was the only shop within walking distance and it was fine, but I was glad to get the car back so we could go elsewhere. I think there was something about walking there too made it feel less stressful, maybe it's because I wasn't walking up more than about 3 lanes before heading to the checkout.

I took my son over to Liverpool for an orchestra rehearsal. Usually he was there longer but on this day only needed for about an hour. So I checked where there was a local supermarket and went there. It was in Everton. I don't know Liverpool really, nor this area of the city.

First I spotted a woman in her nightclothes and slippers. Then I saw a whole family of children in their nightclothes with a woman. This says it all. I guess I'm just a snob really!

Not sure this is the right place for this post but Cambridge had a pr*mark open up about a year ago and I didn't bother going in until last week..... I walked in the door and saw masses and masses of clothes piled high on the pillars, on shelves, on tables and I stood and looked around and walked out again. I felt the place was enveloping me in and knew it wasn't my cup of tea. The amount of people was eye boggling... I think I am becoming too much of a hermit!!

I went to Primarni in Harrogate on a Saturday afternoon, it looked like a giant version of a teenager's bedroom. Clothes, bags, accessories, shoes in one big jumble!

Unfortunately it's not going to have a petrol station which is what we could really do with. We have such high petrol prices round here and Tesco could do with a bit more competition in that department too!

The pyjamas thing is weird. I don't think it's snobby to kind of expect people to be not wearing nightwear in a public place PI.

I've never been into a Primark. The last charity shop I worked at had a lot of Primark stuff donated, the only stuff that was in good enough condition to put out to sell were the unworn, still tagged items. Anything that had been worn and washed just didn't make the grade. Very occasionally something would make it to the 50p rail but other things would be sold for rags.

I am not sure what people will do. Asda and Aldi are different. Perhaps people will go and check out the prices.

i think we could do with more independent garages but that isnt going to happen now. The supermarkets have seen to that.

I found something out about this supermarket this morning and I wondered what you think. It says in our local paper its a multi storey car park as its in town and not out of and that people will have to pay to park. It says regular shoppers will be able to claim the money back after a minimum spend in the shop.

Would this put you off parking in a multi storey looking for a space and then having to claim back after a minimum spend for parking?

A supermarket where we used to live did this as it was in the town centre. It wan't an issue as the minimum spend was really low, £2 iirc and it was refunded at the till so no messing about.

ah £2 thats not much then. I wonder if multi storey will put people off. Its not like parking on the flat at an out of town. Probably not. I guess they research all this before they spend millions.

I would use the shop if I could walk to it or catch a bus but not if the only mode of transport was the car.

None of my cars come off too well in multi storey car parks. They can get up them but ground coming down those steep ramps. Sad

I have used the normal car parks before, where you claim back the carparking fee's but it's always been where the carpark is part of the shop and not 'Down the road' from the shop.

I would think it would be a bit diffucult to go drop off your shoping then drive your car back to the shop find another parking space and then go back into the shop to reclaim your carparking fees.

Aldi will not lose custom in my opinion. A few years ago I shopped weekly in Morrisons regularly spending £80 + for the four of us weekly (3 adults, 1 child). When I gave up work after much reluctance and moaning on my part I was persuaded to use the lower cost supermarkets, Aldi, Lidl, Farm Foods, Netto and it took me about a month but I halved my weekly shopping bill and if I go over £38 I moan now (ok I go to a local butchers once a month to get meat on top of that to last). A couple of weeks I ventured in a new Asda store that has just opened and even though I was very careful with what I picked up I got far less for much more than I now pay at Aldi/Lidl so that is my curiosity satisfied and they won't be getting my footfall again.

I don't know why the multi story would put people off. A supermarket we used to go to had the parking underneath the shop and they just had an escalator, but one that you can put your trolley on that took you up and down, there were plenty of trolley return places on each level so no messing about.

And as for getting the cash back for parking it happened when you paid for the groceries, when you park up you get a ticket like a normal pay and display, put one bit in your car the other bit in your purse then show it to the cashier when you pay and they hand over £2. No problem, no need to pack up the car then return to the shop for validation or to get the cash, one transaction, no difficulty at all.

It opened while i was away. There were queues waiting for it to open i saw the pics in the paper and people saying how excited they were. Bit sad i thought. Anyone would think there was a food shortage. Rolling Eyes
