I've had them and I always think they're really disappointing. I've had this conversation with a friend who makes them for a living. My point is that to hold all the fancy icing and decorative stuff the cake has to be more dense than a fairy cake and it makes them heavy. She agreed. They can't be quite as light as a fairy cake otherwise they'd collapse under all the other stuff. There's too much icing and not enough cake. It's like a sandwich for me, you need the ratio between filling and bread to be right.
I think the cupcake thing is moving on now though isn't it, we've been through whoopie pies, cupcakes are still hanging on in there, fancy large cakes seem popular now. Only a matter of time, imo, until people see it's a fad and just want a good old cake.
Not that I feel strongly about it or anything

Re: Cupcakes am I the only one?
fairy cakes ahoy in our house. Can't beat a light fluffy fairy cake.
All that icing is too much icing for me. I know, sounds weird to say seeing as I have a really sweet tooth but 1) it's too awkward to hold, 2) too pretentious to not get all over you and 3) spoils the actual taste of the cake which I feel should be the most important thing
Having said all that - if there was a one sat right now on the bench I would pop the kettle on and eat it
I've seen cakes in a jar which looks really cool - perfect for a night in on your own, Pj's on and indulging

Re: Cupcakes am I the only one?
My cupcake recipe is really good and not at all heavy I find. Whilst I like the look of them will all that icing they are terribly sickly not mention must cost a fortune in butter which at £1.20 for even the basic butter just a waste of expensive ingredient to me. Much better to smother them in own brand Nutella instead

I am not really into cupcakes they do look very nice though.

Re: Cupcakes am I the only one?
I made my first ones a week or so back. Wouldn't win any competitions, but my family were suitably impressed, and I thought they looked pretty good :-) I do prefer to make big cakes though, like fruit cake, or victoria sandwiches etc. Not so fiddly :-)

I read the butter in the fluffy sponges and the sugar in the icing piled on top could make them as addictive as cocaine. The headline was why trendy cupcakes may be as addictive as cocaine.

They are far too rich for my liking and make me feel sickie if I eat one. They can look pretty.
I prefer a my large fairy cakes and I don't like any thing made with butter. I can't stand butter.
