feel like such a flipping girl!!

Post  flibsey on Wed Sep 07, 2011 12:00 am

I've bought some curtain poles to put over our annoyingly open plan doorways and across the stairs for winter. tried putting them up myself and not having to rely on the incredibly hard working husband....I managed to get three wooden curtain poles home from the town centre, on foot, by myself, cut one to size using the electric jigsaw, marked out pilot holes and began drilling...

I just cant do it lol. things kept going wrong, kept dropping stuff, my hands wern't working well (wrist and joint problems) etc so I've given up and I rang him in tears.

he did his usual, wonderful, supportive "well, you TRIED and that's worth something" positive spin on it, but I'm annoyed at my "girlyness"!!

I don't want to be a useless girl, I want to be a girl who can do stuff by herself! I want to show my daughter that even a lady can wield an electric drill and a jigsaw!!! oh well. next time lol.

no advice needed, just support thanks!

awww flibsey i know what you mean. I put up 3 shelves in our bedroom a couple of months ago and basically all 3 are being held up by the first one and the stuff on them. i have had to pile the stuff on the shelves so they all stack up together Laughing

Yip girl here too. Similar thing, I got some bendy curtain rail, the plastic stuff - to go around the bay window in our bedroom. What a faff! I did it, kind of, It lasted 2 weeks before the weight of the curtains pulled it down. Sad

I too don't like relying on The DH for everything practical or DIY. Yesterday I managed to pull the garage door off the roller on the right. I tried for ages to fix it but couldn't. I forgot to tell DH and the poor bloke had to get out of bed to go fix it incase his fishing gear got stolen. I just wish I could have done it myself on the afternoon.

I doubt my tales of woe have been much of a support but at least you're not alone in feeling like such a flipping girl Shocked Wink

woah......wait a minute. Just read back......if you didn't have wrist and joint problems would you have managed to complete it? Not sure what your house is like but if you're trying to drill into a concrete lintle sometimes you need a hammer drill. Even my dad with a hammer drill has struggled with our windows etc. I don't think one minute you've failed and certainly not because of any "girly-ness". You've tackled things I wouldn't even attempt. Electric jigsaw? Wouldn't know where to start with one Laughing

thanks everyone! much appreciated!

and thanks for the info on concrete lintels, if we do need a hammer drill thankfully I have a brother in law with a house he's doing up and a fetish for big tools Very Happy
I thought it was just that I've got dodgy wrists and can't grip things as well as other people!!

I'm good with the jigsaw, and usually with the drill too. I built a guineapig cage a couple of years ago all on my lonesome Laughing hubby came home to find piggie in a new, rather odd shaped, but completely free house instead of his little box we'd had him in lol.

I'm quite practical at most things (in fact more so than OH Laughing ) but I'm allergic to motor oil so can't even lift the bonnet and it really annoys me to have to be girly and say "darling the washer water has run out can you top it up for me please?" I feel so pink and fluffy and believe me I am not a pink sort of a person!

I'm the same with emptying the hoover, I could do it but would be ill for days, hate having to say to OH "Can you empty the hoover please" and then have to wait till he gets up to do it
