Heating on in August
:affraid:
I cant believe it we are freezing and i have had to put the heating on in flipping august!!!
I am fizzing who stole summer!
we are all fully dressed, wrapped in blankets and still cold, the weather here has been awful
I had planned to keep the heating off until october and start putting up my other curtains and sorting out draught excluders towards the end of next month, looks like i will have to do it a lot sooner
anyone else frozen and any other keeping warm tips (for summertime!)

Re: Heating on in August
I had this conversation with my Aunt the other evening, her husband suggested putting the fire on, she wouldn't let him though & wrapped up in extra layers.
I got my thick wooly socks out last evening, as I couldn't get warm. Once my feet warmed up I felt ok again, I did have a t shirt, sweatshirt & a fleece on as well.
Hopefully we'll have an Indian summer, else it's going to seem like a long winter. I'm goinf to see if I can get into Primark for some more fleece throws this week.
Luckily it's only me so I tend to just bundle up, put on more clothes & throws.
I have to put some timber around the outside of my door frame before winter sets in, as the door comes into the lounge & it's the original Victorian door I think with lots of gaps.
The draught that comes in is unbelievable, there's a pair of heavy curtains up over the door & a pair of velvet ones to separate the lounge from the hallway, I'd like to reinstate the wall but can't afford it, but may look into getting doors put up. At the moment the stairs are in the lounge as well as the only door into the house & exposed floorboards, eek. I've just bought stuff that you put into the gaps between the boards, hopefully that will make a big difference.
I think that this winter is going to be very worrying for people who have a family so can't really reduce their heating thermostats, with the way gas & electricty has gone up this year if it's another cold one, I don't know how the average person will be able to afford fuel.
(Sorry for going on so much, again).

Re: Heating on in August
at least its not just me was starting to think i was going soft haha
well the wind has broken down the fence at the back of the garden, i went out and tried to wedge it up with wood until the weather clears up a bit then i will have to take it all down not looking forward to that as the fence is 6 feet high and i am definately not that tall
the conservatory has sprung a leak as well round the sealant at the door, i think its just the way the wind is blowing but will have to get that sorted out as well

Re: Heating on in August
I've been seriously thinking about putting the heating on too. Its only the thought of "but its August" that si stopping me at the moment and the fact that I've said to DH that it won't go on much this year unless really needed - what on earth made me say that!!
I'm busy reading the Preparing for Winter thread on MSE Old Style and am getting loads of tips and ideas of how to get ready for Winter and hopefully keep the bills down a bit!!
Some long range weather forecasters are predicting a really long and very very cold Winter this year with more snow!!!

Re: Heating on in August
I promise I DID know where you are before I posted the 'man up' advice lollyfin!
Wouldn't it be marvellous to have intuitive heating that knew how warm you wanted to be? So if you're doing housework, the temp knocks back and if you're sitting on the sofa with your laptop, it realises you're sitting still and need a bit more. Marvellous if it was free as well!

Re: Heating on in August
I've been saving like crazy for a woodburner. When we first built our extension with u/f heating it was always my intention to have a beautiful contemporary shiny woodburning stove. We couldn't afford to add it to the build at the time, but hoping to get it done this winter. I already have a log store that dh built recently and he's been saving all offcuts of wood ever since the build, so there are boxes of it downstairs. Can't wait!
In the interests of getting one sooner rather than later I'm prepared to have a lesser stove than my original plan!

Re: Heating on in August
I think it doesn't help when it's damp too although after a wet start here in Midlands it's was nice and sunny. Mind you I am aiming for October for heating going back on. I wouldn't hold your breath for any type of Indian summer though. We had summer.......it was back in Easter LOL
Re: Heating on in August
Don't want to put the heating on yet, well I've not ordered the oil a little bit :affraid: also cant stand the smell of hot dust off the rads when it first gos on for winter
Will fire the log burner up first and try to make do with that until it gets very cold

Re: Heating on in August
It started off really nice this morning, lasted until 10.15 when I was out with the dog & has been iffy ever since.
Now it is cold really windy & keeps raining.
I did manage to get a really thick padded body warmer at a charity shop today for £3.00 I've got 2 now so they should see me through the winter.
My thick wooly socks are on & my dressing gown over my clothes.
A really good buy last year was a poncho type thing, like a blanket with a hole cut out, a couple of quid in a charity shop & so warm & cosy.
I think that I may buy some fingerless gloves this year, in fact I shall go right now & have a look at ebay.

Re: Heating on in August
The last couple of days it's been really windy and very very wet first thing but the afternoon and early evenings have been warm and sunny. It's really dark at the minute and I've got a cardi on but I know later I'll probably be sweltering!
Had a look through my wardrobe the other day (have I said this already?) to write a list of stuff I want/need for the winter and I think I'm alright so no need to go shopping
