Re: Anyone been outside today in their garden?
It's gorgeous here. Our living room is south west facing so I've had to shut the blinds to keep the sun out and the room cool.
I've been for a little poke around, looking at the flowers and the thousands of berries. One of the blackbirds was very put out at me being out there and make a right old racket until I came in again. Typical.

It's too hot out in the sun here in West Mids hung out the washing and then made a hasty retreat.

If it's ok with TP and everyone can we use this thread to talk about gardening in general? One of my big things for 2012 is to get the garden sorted out so I'm sure I'm going to want to talk about it a lot, so having a thread here would be great. I'd love to pick the brains of any keen gardeners as well as sharing what we're all up to.

Yes our lawn needs cutting, it will also collect up the fallen leafs, just want the neighbours tree to go bald now
Still haven't emptied my buckets my toms were in, thinking of making another bed to use them up

yes. I went to tidy the brussels and broccolli, remove yellow leaves, check for pests etc.

I would love to get my garden sorted too, but really don't have a clue about gardening. At the moment all we do is trim the hedge and cut the grass (for grass read weeds). I would love a nice flat lawn with a veggie patch, so that is my challenge for next year!

Re: Anyone been outside today in their garden?
2boys... take off any turf where you want your bed to be (remove the grass and top 2" soil). dig lightly, top with either a cheap blanket or upside down carpet (preferably wool but other is fine if you're leaving it for under 6 months) and cut crosses in your cover every couple of feet or so. plant a bog standard potato under each cross. the carpet/blanket will keep down weeds and the potatoes will basically dig the ground for you! in 4-6 months, remove the carpet. if you want to harvest the potatoes and not just use them for digging purposes, leave the plants until they flower then harvest.

Re: Anyone been outside today in their garden?
Do you get much wildlife in your garden?
I'm loving all the birds today. I've just seen about 15 long tailed tits in the quince bush. We've also had coal tits, great tits, blue tits, the bossy robin, the blackbirds, a couple of linnets, starlings, goldfinches and a couple of noisy magpies.
The way the gardens are set up here means there are no real gaps for animals to travel through so we don't have anything like hedgehogs, we have seen a frog a couple of times - there's just enough space for it to squeeze under the fence. We're thinking of making a pond so maybe we'd get more frogs.
We get hundreds of starlings on the lawns at the front and on the phone lines. They roost on the piers (one here and 3 in Blackpool) so we get loads. I love them!

LOL,yes, we get 4 cats on a regular basis. Our living room windows are floor to ceiling so I often see a stand off between a cat licking its lips and one or both of my rabbits staring back through the window!

Re: Anyone been outside today in their garden?
With our new puppy have been out in garden a lot. Have noticed over last two weeks how little rain we've had as most toilet training trips have been done in the dry lol
Was out last Friday, was glorious. Saw about 5 lady birds. Does this mean spring is on it's way???

Re: Anyone been outside today in their garden?
I think spring is on the way. The bunnies have been going mad for the past few days, tearing about and binkying all over. The seagulls are up really early at the minute too, seems like they're getting ready for something...
