Am I being unreasonable not getting my 10 year old mobile phone yet

Post  bildanto on Wed Feb 15, 2012 12:55 am

Hello, I have been sticking to my guns over not allowing my 10 year old ds a mobile phone yet. His friend came around today as it is his 7th birthday sporting a new mobile phone so this has thrown the subject up again as my son says "everyone" in his primary school has one and he is one of the only ones without one. I have thought when he goes to the high school in September he should have one as for the first time he will be travelling by school bus but I do worry about all the scare stories re radiation levels. When did you let your child have a mobile and at what age please as I am wondering if I am being too strict here, thanks for your input.

Interesting one. Hope someone with a younger child comes along and helps. I would say stick to what you think and dont be swayed. How is he going to pay for it? Will he look after it? Beware when he says everyone has one that may or not be true. They tend to say that dont they to out pressure on you. I think its up to you as the parent to decide?

My son was 13 that was in 2003.

Hmm, thanks for your reply. Yes I haven't been drawn into the "everyone else has one" tale but have to admit all the kids who call and plenty a lot younger I am seeing at the school do have one. Well I have been looking at GiffGaff as that seems the cheapest for pay as you go (as long as you put on £10 once every 3 months it is free internet and you can ring other GiffGaff numbers for free) mobiles. I don't give him any pocket money (again I am told such and such has this much pocket money), but my mum does put some money away in a pot for him every week which usually goes into his bs account or he treats himself occasionally. His 11th birthday is April so I will sit and ponder til then but opinions are welcome.

I'd be concerned if any child of mine aged 10 was using a mobil phone to connect to the internet where oh where is the parental control over what that child can access?

Having a mobile phone at that age opens a child up to those's bullies who'll steal it off him.

Why does he require a mobile phone is it to use only in emergencies say if he's missed his bus from school and needs someone to go met him? If this is why for 'emergencies' then you'd need to teach your child to keep the mobile hidden at all time's.

Most schools will take mobiles away from children if they are caught 'playing' with them in class. Or should one go off in class the teacher will more often than remove the mobile from the child.

I think you need to ask why?

Yes I agree over the internet I was going to get him a phone without internet on it but I mentioned the internet as I would have to be on giff gaff too so that seems the cheapest deal with the internet on my giff gaff sim. His game machines I don't allow him internet use on them they are used purely for gaming/watching dvds. A few of his 10 year old friends are even on facebook even though they shouldn't have an account until they are 13 but I am most popular yet again as I said he can join facebook when he has left school as I visit a lot of anti bullying websites as he has been quite badly bullied in the past and see how much bullying goes on once the children are on facebook. Unfortunately I seem to be swimming against the tide all the time with my views and hence do question whether I am too old fashioned being an older mum. The phone would be purely as peace of mind in case he misses the bus as we live rurally and there is no public service to use if he missed the school bus.

Well he is away all this week with school and they couldn't take phones with them but I bet some of them do and it would be nice to hear he is ok. I am going to get him just a basic pay as you go phone without internet I think when he is 11. Sunday night I watched TOWIE and there was a little girl on there about 5/6 years old and she had already had owned 4 blackberry phones!! He does need to be able to contact me in September once he goes to the next town to school in case he misses the school bus so it is for my peace of mind as much as him wanting one.

Got him a mobile just before his 11th birthday, it cost £14 and is on giffgaff network (run by O2) and is pay as you go. We put him on £5 a month which gives him 60 minutes, 300 texts and if someone rings him not on giffgaff he gets how many minutes they rung him credited that month. It is working well, he never uses up what he has, and his phone does not go on the internet as it is only very basic. His friend has been brought an Iphone 4 at 11 so he did have a small moan at the lack of features on his phone until I explained he was lucky to even get a phone so he didn't bother after that and is pleased enough and now he has time to learn to use the phone before he starts his commute to a new school in September.
