Refashioning clothes?

Apologies for my lack of posting, finding the time to post here (and still on MSE ) and everything else I've been a bit slack.

So I found a blog where the lady in question is refashioning awful clothes into nicer ones. I confess she's very petite and much of the stuff she gets her hands on are super large (she's in US) which probably makes it easier for her to do this but I wondered if any of you had ever refashioned clothing you didn't like into something you did.

I've done things like that in the 80's with wollens.


I often alter thing to change them into something a bit different or special or to so they suit me better than the orginal articule.

Recyling/upcyling clothes can be great fun and result in a old garment becoming something really lovely, different and new.

Aisles is it easy to refashion woollens? The girl on said blog chopped down a hideous roll neck sweater into a one armed one (sounds awful but with the pattern it looked amazing) but for some reason I tend to think as it's knitted it's not a simple to stitch and cut off any excess for example.

It doesn't work so easily with hand knitted woollens as the stitching can unravel before you machine it.

One way to stop it is to have a seam allowance and with the aid of you sewing machine and some bais binding. Use the zigzag function and choose the option that allows the stitch to be very close togther and sew the bias binding up to the edge where you are going to cut.

This means you are sealing the edge and making it stronger.

The you can either turn a hem or put a lovely braid/ribbon on the correct side of the garment to cover your machine stitching OR You now have a thin wideth of zigzg and bias binding which will be your inside of your new seam if you are attaching another piece of woollen/material.

Shop made woollen's are a bit easier to cut and not come undone, but it's always a good idea to a zigzag down the cut to help it stay good.

If a item is 100% wool you can felt it as well which makes it strong and very warm.
