Lidl, Aldi and M and S

Post  TP on Fri Dec 16, 2011 1:14 am

It says today in the paper that Lidl and Aldi have beaten Marks for the first time. They were praised for their quality of fresh produce and value the survey was undertaken by 11,000 members of Which.

I find this confusing alot of people will shop in a variety of places and also you cant get everything you need in the discounters like Lidl and Aldi. I dont think its a good comparison tbh.

I haven't been to an Aldi or Lidl for a few years - we don't have one here, the closest one is about 5 miles away and in the opposite direction to where we shop so the savings would have to be huge for it to be worth our while. The quality of fresh veg has always been ok in Aldi, I wasn't as impressed with Lidl, but it was fine if I was buying something to use straight away.

We do have M&S Simply Food in the town and we buy the odd bit and bob there. Sometimes we'll buy fruit when it's on offer (clementines b1g1f etc) but I rarely buy veg there because I think it's expensive. I prefer our supermarket because lots of the veg is local.

In terms of the prepared fruit and veg M&S do use quality stuff. I used to work in a factory preparing fruit and fruit salads for Boots, a couple of airlines and other supermarkets. The M&S stuff was made with different fruit, on a separate line using different juices and things like that. Lots of the other lines used preservatives, extra sugar etc but the M&S stuff couldn't have any of that. It was far more time consuming and precise to prepare the stuff for them than any of the other people we supplied.

My mum shops in Aldi occasionally and says that Aldi veg is really tasty, cheap and (usually) British.

We have a Lidl a few miles away, but it always has massive queues and is really busy, so I don't bother. But I like some of the produce as it reminds me of french supermarkets and we can get some unusual continental ingrediants there.

We do treat ourselves to a M&S meal now and again (The dine in for £10 if we are celebrating!) and we will probably buy some luxury treats for over Christmas too. The M&S Cheese Scones from the bakery are delish BTW!
