Decluttering - how do you do yours?

Post  MrsH on Sat Nov 26, 2011 7:59 pm

Does anyone have any fool proof method?

I keep talking about cracking on with this but among the general household jobs and running around after a VERY lively 3 year old, I never seem to get started! I think up ideas and write them down but then feel too overwhelmed to begin.

This morning I had a brainwave that I won't make lists (apart from my usual chores one!), but I will just grab a bin liner and wander through the house binning the obvious. I could do this every other day until I can clearly access the areas which need attention. Then break it down into tackling specific spots. What do you do?

Any tips would be gratefully received, thanks Very Happy

Every now and then I go through a room and work out what's for the charity shop, what to be recylced into something else, what's for going onto ebay etc.

Put things back where they belong.

We never have much to go to the rubbish as most things are recyled in one form or another.

for the stuff that gets left all over evry surface, i tip it all into a big box, then sit with a good film on and sort out the box!

everywhere else, if it's not been used in a year, it gets reviewed...

Thanks for the ideas, they're great. Today, I actually made a start!!! With hubby's help, I took 2 bags, and labelled one recyclable, and one non recyclable, and went through the kitchen, then the living room Very Happy There is a long way to go, but it looks better to me already. I reckon if we do a little bit as often as possible, we'll get through it pretty quickly. Part of preparations for our new addition in April Smile

Hi MrsH,

Thankfully we're decluttered now but when I was decluttering I always had a laundry basket, bag for rubbish, bag for recycling, bag for charity shop, box for "stuff that lives elsewhere" and a pile for "stuff that needs to go back into this room". I'd do the flylady thing of doing 15 minutes then deal with the stuff I'd worked through (which meant I wasn't having to cart huge bags of stuff around afterwards, adding another half an hour onto decluttering time). Then that was that. I also kept a small bin and a carrier bag in the bathroom so whenever I went upstairs if I saw some rubbish or recycling I could stick it in the bin or bin bag, that really helped too.

My foolproof tip would be to do little and often, keep taking breaks so you maintain the motivation to keep getting back to it. I did a few really long sessions to start with and it was like binge decluttering, I did too much and then felt like it was the last thing I wanted to do. Doing a couple of 15 minute sessions per hour meant I kept thinking that I could do a bit more and it kept me going. Good luck!

Thanks Alec, we're doing good, DH pulled everything out of the understair cupboard today and got cracking, we've filled 2 more rubbish bags, and a bag for the charity shop Very Happy Very pleased with the weekends progress! Throughout the week, I plan to regularly pop into the spare bedroom (babies room!), and do sessions of 15 minutes at a time. Thanks again for the tips Smile

ive done some today. Its amazing the crap you collect. Ive thrown out a mobile charger actually can i recycle that. Old leaflets, a few stray christmas cards, a couple of optical illusion cards, an old mobile phone case, a shoelace, leaflets for days out, an adsl filter. A box that some candles were in. I just get a box and go through makes you feel better.

We have a spare room that should be the home office, But is currently unusable because it is so full of stuff.

It needs a massive declutter, some things are for carbooting, some for ebay, some for charity shop, and some just needs to be binned. Alot of paperwork needs to be filed or shredded and binned.

I just don't know where to start, I need to work out a day where DH and I can go through and sort the lot. (Preferably a day when DD is at her granparents Very Happy )
