Real Open Fire's Empty Real Open Fire's

Post  Aisles Thu Jan 05, 2012 12:52 am

does any one have one and if so do they use it?

We have one but not used it for 2 years as it has a back boiler but as we have Gas Central Heating now.

We need to work out how to safely cap off the Back Boiler to be able now to use the fireplace again. Bascially we no longer have an emersion heater so where does all that pressure from the back boiler go if we have a fire in the grate ummm no were as before it would vent off to the emerision heater. So if we don't cap the Back Boiler heat will be coming out of the old emersion heater cupboard. But if we cap it incorrectly and have a fire in the grate it could cause the Back boiler to explode due to the heat pressure Shocked

personally I think it'd be worth getting a gas engineer in to sort it out for you, it will cost you money but could save your lives.

I wish we had a fire. we used to have a gas fire and back boiler but both were condemned during a routine rental gas inspection 2 weeks after we moved in. the boiler was replaced with a modern condenser upstairs, leaving us with a hole in the livingroom wall the landlord refused to fix...

and *that* will go with us when we finally move.

Unfortantly we did ask a gas engineer to look at it but as it was for a real fire they were unless They could only suggest removeing the fire place, the chimmely and having the fireplace stack reinforced in the roof so it didn't fall down. Rolling Eyes

We want to keep our fire place and we do know there's a way to use it without removing the back boiler.

DH has been looking at a new venting system on the market for unused Back Boilers but he only started looking last night Laughing

So he has to get it right as each size fireplace has a different venting pressure valve. Also you can it have it either venting out the roof or a outside wall. Outside wall would be a no no for us as the fireplace goes through the centre of the property so it's not up against an outside wall. It also has to be easy access for making sure the vent pipe thingie doesn't get blocked. Blocked vent could equal back boiler exploding Shocked Shocked

Seems we have to do some measurement taking and do some maths to work out which venting valve we require and size of pipe Shocked

The gas guy might not be able to do it all but he'll be able to cap it off to make it safe for someone else to remove, deal with any lining for the flue and stuff you might need. That's what we did with our old house. Had it capped off but left the boiler there until someone else could do the other work.

We can't cape it. It mustn't be caped incase we wish to use the fireplace and have a fire in it.

The boiler is still in situ and will remain in situ, there's nothing wrong with the back boiler. It's just no longer going to be used to supplement the heating of the water in the immersion heater. With our new central heating and combination boiler we no longer require a immersion heater.

Beside caping so it's a shut system is not advisable as it could explode the back boiler should we decide to have a log fire in the grate. Not that we will untill the value and piping up through the roofing is done. Very Happy

We now know what size we require yay and where to obtain it and for how much woohoo research is worth the time taken. Very Happy It also come's with all the destructions if we do it ourselves Very Happy

And seeing how we re plumbed and re wired the whole house according to the new regulations it's going to be easy Very Happy

Mmm just have to finish the conservatory first which means the glazing then the underfloor heating then get the plaster in.

Soooo at this rate we should have the Back Boiler sorted and a fire blazing in the fireplace by next winter Very Happy

I'm not an idiot, I do understand what you saying. I was simply sharing my experience from when we had our back boiler disconnected, capped, left the boiler in situ and waited for it to be removed before we we used the fireplace in a different way once we had a combi boiler.

Hmm, we have an open fire in the front room downstairs, but we only use that room as a guest room/ music room and general dumping ground.

We are saving for a wood burner. Soooo looking forward to that.

I don't have an open fire - but wish I did, I love the smell of a real fire.

he refused to fit a new boiler after the old one was condemned. in the middle of november, with a child under 2 in the house... until we threatened legal action.

Flippping eck what a horride person and he's legally responisble to make the property safe if he's renting it out Shocked

He should have had it all checked and sorted prior to you're taking up residence.

I'm glad to hear you stuck to your guns and threatened legal action. He must of realized he'd not a leg to stand on.

There's one of those oft repeated family stories about how I sat for ages in front of some friends of my parents fire as a quite small child hoping desperately that if I sat there long enough someone would come and light it for me.

Only trouble was - it was the middle of the summer!!!!
