Inspired by pipling over on the grocery budget thread.

What would your dream house be like? Location, style and age of house, decoration and furniture etc.

Mine would have to be a villa in the sun overlooking the sea.

Anywhere in particular? Would it be a modern villa with all the mod cons or a rambling old villa with a vineyard and loads of land, or something totally different?

modern I expect all mod cons own pool. When we were in Tenerife we looked around a show home it was lovely. We pretended we were interested in buying they never knew and showed us round. Well you can dream. Wink Stunning views. Nice private road.

I've never been to Tenerife, my brother went last month and had a fantastic time!

If by "dream house" I'm talking about "something I could own if I had a load of cash" then I would want to go for a split roof Huf Haus I just think they're so beautiful and look easy to live in. I love Modernism, the idea of "form follows function" and all that stuff. So the idea that it's a house that looks beautiful but also works - is prefabricated for easy construction, has triple glazing, super insulation and all that stuff.

Because of the large amounts of glass there's not too much decorating to be done so we'd have lots of nice mid-century furniture in there. I'm slightly obsessed with Scandi design as well as Robin and Lucienne day so everything would be very simple but lovely, lots of wood and metal. All about being relaxed and cosy.

I would build the house on the front in the town where I live now, there are some pretty ugly houses on the front and a Huf Haus would look great overlooking the beach - I'd need a great window cleaner though!

It would take something pretty amazing to make me want to leave the place we live now. I love my house far too much and the idea of having to move would make me pretty unhappy!

There was a house for sale in Somerset recently (It sold straight away Sad ) That was pretty much my dream house.

A 6 bed Georgian house, 3 receptions (All with high ceilings, original features), Kitchen/Diner with aga, And a sweeping staircase.
It was set in an acre of land with its own private drive to the front. It also came with Outbuildings: a self contained annexe and a coach house.

It had a bit of history, in that it had been used by numerous failed companies as a HQ and the outbuildings had been used for commercial use as well. So it needed a lot of updating, it was clear that it hadn't been looked after at all.
But the best bit was that none of the buildings were listed, so you could decorate and update the house without any constraints.

I would have lived in the annexe, whilst getting the main house renovated and then would have renovated the coach house for my parents to live in.

I would use some of the grounds to grow vegetables and plant fruit trees, DH could have his large greenhouse that he wants and maybe a few chickens.
Still with enough room for DD to play and have slides, swings and a climbing frame.

The only problem for us was location, oh and price of course!
But if you put that house on a bus route and within walking distance of a shop and primary school (And maybe a river at the bottom of the garden for my dad to fish on Rolling Eyes ) And that would be my dream house.

Although if you could afford that you could probably afford a taxi to wherever you wanted to go, so no need to have it near a bus route?

So, would you decorate it in really traditional fashion or something a bit more modern?

Thats very true about the taxi bit Laughing

I think a bit of both, I would have a traditional formal dining room with a big table to sit 10 or more.
The living room would be modern, as clutter-free as possible (no toys allowed!), painted with neutral colours. The play room would be easy to clean with loads of beanbags, soft flooring and one wall painted with blackboard paint so that DD could get really creative!

I would be tempted to have a glass extension on the back of the house, with some bi-folding doors across the back, so that the kitchen opens onto the garden. So my kitchen would be huge with lots of storage and an island in the middle.

Adult bedrooms would be quite traditional with big beds and big oak wardrobes, all en-suite.
DDs bedroom would be exactly as she would like it.

I quite fancy the big folding doors too. Our living room is at the back of the house and we already have floor to ceiling windows and double doors onto the garden. I think it would look really nice with less clunky frames and the ability to open the full width of the window.
