The Scrap Metal Man
Rag and Bone, Scrap Metal. We have a van that comes round nearly every day, blasting the horn and shouting for scrap metal. You always know he is there? I have even seen men dredging the canal looking for scrap. Do other people have noisy vans that come round everyday. Must be some money in it?

Re: The Scrap Metal Man
Haven't seen one for years. We used to have the rag and bone man come round with his horse and cart all the time when I was little. When we had new central heating at the old house we sold the metal to the guys from the travellers site up the road - we knew they were eyeing the house up as they went past about 5 times before coming to the door! Made no odds to us, we got a few bob and the guy fitting the new heating didn't have to pay to go to the tip. Win, win, win.

I remember the rag n bone man and his 'orse n cart! The last 4/5 weekends there has been a chap with a pick up truck ringing a bell and shouting rag bone. gave him some bits and off he went. helped to clear the garage up anyway.

There is a lot of money to be made from scrap metal at the moment. The price for some metals have rocketted apparently. There are 6 very annoying vans round here. I don't know if they're registered or not and do not touch them at all.
There's so many burglaries in the region connected to pipes, cables, lead flashings etc.. even reports of lead being taken from house windows. Ours are fine - still but have warned the landlord that it's happening. Half our village were without their phone for a week because someone had stolen some metal cable (I sound like I live in the bronx don't i lol)
As far as I am concerned scrap men can go scrap off. I wonder how many are declaring their income for tax purposes?? They're noisey and uncouth where I live

ours comes about twice a week, is polite, friendly and uses a bell! and I figure, if I pass my stuff onto them, it's less likely they'll go nicking it from somewhere?!

I believe the price of copper has rocketed too. Made me laugh watching some build it yourself house programme and they'd kitted out the entire external buttering with copper pipes. Might as well stick a target on your house and say "rob me".
We have a number of man in a van who comes round, most I think are likely to be unlicenced although for the first time ever I had one knock the door and check the pushchairs WAS for scrap. I've read letters in the paper where people have had buggies nicked from by the front door!!!

our always asks. we left our old dishwasher (working order, tried to sell it but it was a table top one and it just didnt sell) out the back with a sign on it saying "free!" and he still knocked and asked before taking it!
he did the same with the left over bits of our old washer too. (I kept some parts and made a fire bowl)

does anyone know if you can go direct to scrap metal traders yourself? I have a rather large amount of metal in the shape of a renault megane scenic which needs shifting.

Yes you can, just take your paperwork to prove you own it if it's a car carcass. You also need to get it signed off as vehical scraped for the DVLA
