Did anyone watch this on tv last night? What did you think?

I didn't have particularly high hopes for it as I haven't really enjoyed the last couple of things Hugh has done. And I was a bit disappointed. I know the show wasn't really for me as someone who already doesn't eat meat but it was all just a bit obvious imo. The bit that did get my mouth watering was when he visited the person who is actually a vegetarian and they made the fried rice, stuffed leaves and thai-style salad. That looked amazing!

I know I sound a bit snotty but I just got really fed up that every few seconds there was mention of no meat - how can anyone live without? *shock gasp*. I doubt it would inspire anyone to eat less meat.

Sorry, I was really disappointed. But anyway, did anyone else like it?

I confess I've never watched his shows before but was a bit disappointed with some of the stuff eg samphire tart etc. I live in the Midlands, no where near the sea or indeed any river I'd want to eat something out of so getting hold of some of the stuff wasn't feasible.

I have to say the BBQ looked lovely but like Alec hes making too much out of not using meat rather than pushing why veggies are great in their own right IYSWIM. Eg at the BBQ he was on about the halloumi (sp?) being a lovely sub for bacon or something......I suppose for me it shouldn't be about substitution but just great veggies recipes.

But as a confirmed meat eater it will probably never hit my "spot" Laughing

I found the samphire things funny, we don't have any on the beach here but they do sell it at the local supermarket when it's in season! I agree with you about the substitution thing - the main thing is to get some protein in otherwise everyone would be starving after a while but it's not about having something that makes you think you're having meat - beans, nuts, pulses and cheese/dairy (if you like that sort of thing) are all great sources of protein and afaik meat eater like them too! The BBQ did look ok but it's just basic stuff that you'd kind of expect anyone to cook without much thought, and they spent all their time covering up the taste of the veg with garlic and stuff. Seems odd to me. But what would I know?

I don't get the bacon thing. It's one of the many lazy things people say when they find out you don't eat meat (it's not a big deal to me I don't know why it should be to anyone else). When I was a meat eater I ate most meat - loved game, red meat of all kinds, ate camel and zebra amongst other things. Bacon is so far down the list in terms of nice meat I don't know why people make such a song and dance about it. Slight tangent there but I think venison producers and the like must get really fed up that everyone rattles on about salty fatty bacon.

I love bacon LOL but then I probably do have an unsophisticated palate Laughing I don't like game, lots of red meat etc and I don't eat venison. Probably why bacon appeals so much to me Laughing

Very Happy Unsophisticated palate! (going to steal that phrase and use it about myself). I'm not saying there's anything wrong with bacon - very versatile and convenient, but if I ever took leave of my senses and ate meat again it wouldn't be the first thing I went for. Actually knowing me it would be something daft and totally not worth it like a sausage roll or something!
