costco v supermarket
just wondering if anyone goes to costco and bulk buys meat/tins etc and if it works out any cheaper. our nearest costco is about 45-50 miles away so a good £20 on petrol plus theres membership fees too.

I go to Costco about one every 5-6 months. My main purchases are the soap powder (either costco own or the persil when they have a deal on), tinned plum tomatoes as buying them in a pack of 12 they work out the same price as basics range but are far superior quality and flavour. The other bits are meat, their minced steak is fantastic, no gristle. Basically I find it supermarket prices but butcher quality.
Booze I don't find so cheap but some of the branded stuff might be cheaper in bulk but I don't tend to study that as I don't buy it.
50 miles is a long way to go, when you factor in the cost of petrol and membership this is money you could spend at the butcher.......but then again it depends on whether you just want to buy meat. Anyway of say combining a trip like this with any other errands, visits for friends/family???

it would be for meat, tins, washing powder, general stuff like that. its next to ikea so i do love a nosey in there lol. I wouldnt actually mind the drive there as its always a wee run and its also a day out for my mum (who doesnt really get far as she cares for my disabled dad). i love just nosing around the place. would be once every few months so not like every week. im going to wait until after christmas and save up few hundred pound (always seem to spend loads in there lol) and have a trip there. about 6 years ago i got a gorgeous wooden framed mirror, cost £30, extremely heavy and well made, still hangs lovely in my living room.

The tomatoes are good value, excellent quality for the price of cheap. Doesn't cost me a whole membership fee as I'm a subsidiary card holder on someone else's card, think it's about £14. Can get branded beans for a decent price quite often. Sugar is usually much cheaper.
I don't get all my meat there, but the mince is good. For a very special occasion I've been known to buy steak there, the big tubs of sundried tomatoes are good if you will get through them, soap powder, eggs, milk is reasonable price, you just need to know the normal price of stuff in the supermarket. I know some people don't know the price of stuff, but I bet most people here do! LOL!
You can always trust the quality, but the prices you do have to watch. I find the fruit and veg terribly expensive, but I"m used to Aldi supersix prices LOL!
