What Have You Studied? Empty What Have You Studied?

Post  alec eiffel Tue Oct 04, 2011 7:15 pm

Sorry, that's a rubbish title but I couldn't think of anything else!

I've noticed a few people have mentioned college or OU or other courses they've been on or are on currently. So what are you doing, what have you done or is there anything you fancy trying in the future. I include cake decorating, life drawing, life skills and any other classes in with this of course too, not just academic stuff.

I've just applied for my first OU course, Introduction to Psychology, hopefully working towards a degree in Psychology. Just waiting to see if I get funding for it or not, been a long time since I did any studying. I haven't really told many people I'm doing it as I'm a bit worried that I won't be smart enough to finish it, was quite clever when I was younger but over the years seem to have lost my confidence in myself. So will see what happens when I start this first course.

I haven't done any studying since I finished my A levels. there was a very good reason for that as by that point I was sick of it Embarassed I swear it was A Level Economics that finished me off LOL

I am doing cake decorating course at the mo but if I am honest whilst it's fun I am not learning anything my mum can't teach me and its costing a small fortune each week on top of the £8 weekly class fee Shocked

I haven't really got time for any studying and I think I'd rather read/study for fun rather than having exams at the end of it Shocked
I also do an adult tap class which again I could take the exams for but noooooo it's for fun only Very Happy

I have been studying courses to make up an OU psychology degree but have decided to combine social sciences with geography degree so I can do the PGCE and secondary teach. I know, must be mad but I really miss the challenge of working with the older ones. I used to work with disaffected teenagers in Secondary schools before I moved into Infant and Primary so I'm not totally blind to the rigors of teaching.

I would love to attend a cookery teaching school for a weekend. My sister gave me a Betty's Cookery School brochure just last night actually but too expensive for me just now.

I would also like to learn pottery and stained glass. Would love to learn and make something on a sewing machine and of course would like to learn how to knit still. I guess I am creative but lack the skills to get my body to do what my mind is jumping up and down about.

Edited to add.. 2boysmum - if I can do it you can too! I've done OU psych intro and it's super interesting. You get shown the way all through it. You have your own tutor with email contact and a tutor group forum to help you. Every thing you need to know is on the OU student page so you can never miss anything. I hope you get the funding, it's a great help and the only way I can do the courses.

I want to be a model for life drawing! looking at my body with an artist's eye, I think I have an interesting play of light and shadow on my flabby bits lol!!!

educationally, I'd love to study theology and the history of religion as a sort of anthropological course. I'm not sure it exists! I'm not christian, but it interests me from an outsider's perspective.

I'd also love to learn to drive... problem there being that since the coma in 2006, I have concentration issues and don't trust myself so I think it's probably a pipe dream and I have to learn how to get used to people and busses.

I'd like to just be able to say "I have a degree". I still feel very bad that I ended up dropping out of uni in 2004....but I was failing mierably and hated the place and wasnt any good at the course lol!!!

At uni I read Multimedia systems for my first year. advertised and described as the artistic sideof computing with no programming. got to year 2 and guess what? all fricking programming. changed in the middle of my second year (which i was failing) to a combi course of MMS and early education. great except that having not been in year 1 of early education, I had no idea what was expected of me and completely cocked it up. battled on until near the end of the third year i'd been there and gave up, feeling hopelessly defeated. to be honest i never should have gone to uni but was pushed into it by my mum and 6th form college.

I'm very intelligent, but i don't mix well with people as they often take me the wrong way, I am a bit slow on the uptake (slower since 2006) and need a lot of time and help to process information. and if it's got combinations of numbers and letters on one line, you've no hope of me getting it.

I've been a life model. It's great, the pay is not too bad and everyone is really nice to you, you never need to buy your own cuppa. Plus you get to boss people about "move that heater", "I want a break" etc. Downside when you see people in the street they, almost without fail, say "I didn't recognise you with your clothes on" Rolling Eyes

Not sure really, maybe just approach the art department at your local college. I did it when I was a student so I already had my foot in the door. I'm not sure how they found Jean, the other model, though she'd been there for years when I started.

Forgot to answer my own question.

I just about passed my GCSE's, terrible grades but never to worry. I did A levels in English Language, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology. I have HND in Art and Design (specialism textiles) and a degree in Linguistics and Philosophy. That's it I think.

I do think about going to college to do something new but I don't know what that would be...

I left school after A levels completely sick of education and the type of people I'd been at school with and couldn't face another 3 years of it so didn't take up my uni place (Japanese language and business management). Over the years in between I've done various arty courses including papermaking and a distance learning course on Interior design. I'm now about to take my first exam in umpteen years for my first OU module (Indroduction to health and social care) and about to start my next module (working with children, young people and families) - 'm aiming at a BA(Hons) in CHildhood and Youth Studies.

I have no A levels, but have some GCSE's. My favourite one was Physcology (have i even spelt that right? Probably not. Shocked

I love learning and would like to do Business Studies, Sociology and Economics, things like that. I love anything business also.

I went on a course to learn how to manage and administrate our website a few years ago. That was interesting. There is probably more i will have a think.

Left school with the usual O levels (yep that long ago!) done various IT, Shorthand, Internet technology, PA, Administration, Customer Services, Health and Nutrition, Health and Safety in the workplace, IOSH, Risk Assessment, Equality and Diversity, Maths, English (again!), various art courses, Furniture Restoration, French, degree in Management, other management courses, Team Leading, Coaching and Mentoring, Estate Agency, Lettings Agents, NVQ Assessing, Internal Verification (a bit like a inspector) and lastly beauty therapy.

I have been lucky in that I have changed careers a couple of times and employers have paid for me to study and be qualified in that particular field. I have had a bit of a gut full of studying but having said that, I have done yoga for quite a while some years ago and would like to take this up again but with 121 teachings, only problem is, there aint no one near me to do this!

Was recently trying for my advanced motorbike licence but decided to forget it when OH was ill earlier on this year.

Oh my I thought Economics sounded interesting and then learnt that most of it was theory and didnt work in the real world! The canons of taxation.......not the most riveting of subjects Surprised

I left school with 8 O levels and havent done that much since
i started an OU degree course years ago, health and social care, I did 3 courses but didnt complete it due to family stuff ( that was when my mum became sick)
I am really not comfortable around lots of people so the thought of going to college makes me feel physically sick altho i do love reading and learning things. if i had more confidence and didnt go bright red everytime i had to talk to people and knew what i wanted to do, 39 and still no clue!, i would probably love to go college but for now its a no

What have I studied? Everything and the kitchen sink! And I've spent a huge amount of time among the brainiest in the country - and a good dose of common-sense would do all of us a much bigger favour Smile

I've done a few... Can't remember them all, but just off the top of my head;
Hypnotherapy
Complete Mind Therapy
Doula courses
Phlebotomy
Manicure & Pedicure
Hopi Ear Candles
Waxing (body)
Universal Contour Wraps

I'm about to take a Chocolatier qualification, and a confectionery course, and I'm thinking about doing massage and gel nail extensions.

I'm also hoping to take three A Levels in the next year or so. Hoping to do Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.

I also did Painting & Decorating at NVQ level but had to leave the course before I qualified.

What Have You Studied? 300268043 So proud of myself, busy now with K218, working with children, young people and families and just this week started U212, childhood. Going to take a break after that finishes in October as I will be half way through my degree course and think I will have earned 3 months off over Christmas.
